Why? Because I can.

For some reason I really enjoy hypermiling my truck. Something about making it do something it was never designed for is oddly satisfying. I reached a new personal record yesterday. I briefly saw 27.6 for my average tank fuel mileage.

Truck is a ‘16 Tacoma, 4x4, manual, double cab, and a short bed. All mileage in rush hour traffic commuting across the city. EPA rated at 17/21.

Kinja'd!!!

Highest mark yet. Tried for 28 mpg, couldn’t quite get there.

Kinja'd!!!

When I got home. Still over 26 mpg.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the overall trip.

I think the way it calculates average fuel economy is weird. It seems to not count idling towards the tank average fuel mileage but it does for the trip.

Nice work! When I moved back to Buffalo from Detroit, my dad followed me in his ‘13 F150 Ecoboost that had a loaded bed. I was driving a u-haul around 62MPH for the trip and my dad was up close behind me drafting. Along with a bit of a tail-wind, he managed 27.5mpg on a 360-mile trip.

Given the right circumstances, even full size trucks can acheive some decent fuel economy/

Thats pretty solid numbers for that truck. Do you like it thusfar?

I do.

This only real issue I have with it is the antenna. It switches in and out of HD radio like crazy. It is so annoying.

The orange peel like coating Toyota puts on the door is dumb.

The hook points on the hitch could be stronger, I bent them helping some people out in a snow storm.

The clutch engagement zone is a bit vague for my tastes.

Haven’t fully figured out exactly when I am in what as far as having the e-diff engaged and stability control and traction control on or off. A bit of time in the owner’s manual should solve that though.

Those are my only real complaints so far, all minor stuff really.

I’m a big fan of the seats. The truck is slow, but whatever, it’s a truck. Powerband is narrow but meh. The transmission shifter throws are pretty good for a truck. They were a bit notchy at first but have smoothed out with some miles.

Yep. All it takes it a light foot on the pedal. I really want to see what the truck will do crossing Nebraska this summer. I should be deep in the 20's doing 75-80 mph according to the active bar thing on my main display.

Do you also reset your trip odometer with each fill up and then compare the fuel economy you get that way versus what the computer says. It would be interesting to see if the numbers vary or if they’re spot on.

No, I haven’t checked it with the hard numbers yet. Just what the computer says. I’ll have to do that for the next tank full.

My dad did that, so yeah I picked up the habit or resetting the trip odometer each tank. I can tell my true gas economy plus when I had the explorer the tank would go from 1/4 to E in like 2 miles, so it was good knowing about when I’d actually need more gas.

My 2010 Tacoma of the same configuration (but auto, since they didn’t offer the DC with a stick in ‘10) got about... 12.

Supercharging is a hell of a drug.

It’ll take just a liiiiiiitle bit more boost. .5 psi more won’t hurt nothing.

That’s impressive, do you have the I4 or the V6?

Even more wow. Makes me want one of these trucks even more. I think I’m going to have to pull the trigger.

You have to barely touch the gas pedal but it is pretty easy to beat the EPA estimate, for me it is at least.

Not bad. I still wish Chevy offered 4x4 with a manual in the Colorado... but I survive. This is a fairly typical view for me.

You should track your mileage on fuelly. I don’t always trust the dash readouts. My truck’s fuelly. And not including idling time is a pretty easy blatant lie.
